Defense Acquisition University Selects ECS to Provide
Virtual World Standard
August 18, 2009. Orlando, Fla. ECS announced today that it has been selected by the Defense Acquisition University (DAU) to develop and implement innovations within the virtual world and social networks to enhance education for Department of Defense acquisition, technology and logistics personnel. As a result of the contract award, ECS will increase its workforce in Central Florida.
The contract, awarded through the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command’s Simulation, Training & Technology Center, provides for the integration of the US Nexus, a National Guard-originated Virtual Worlds program, platform and associated social media to be integrated with DAU’s information technology infrastructure and Learning Model workflow. DAU’s Dr. Alicia Sanchez, a UCF graduate, will be re-locating to Orlando and leading the program and DAU’s on-going presence in the newly announced Teaching and Learning Lab in Orlando.
The contract will include research to gather data, user metrics and statistics to define and integrate the platforms with the DAU information technology. The research will identify how to reach the maximum number of the acquisition, technology and logistics workforce. It will facilitate collaboration, data sharing and modes of interaction between persistent virtual worlds, distributed simulations and existing DAU systems.
“The US Nexus program is a game-breaking technology that provides just the right investment for reuse, moving DAU educational platforms to the virtual world,” said Dr. Chris Hardy, Director, e-Learning and Technology Center . He continued, “US Nexus has the potential to deliver DoD virtual courses, communities of practice, and virtual mentoring on a global scale, giving “blended” a new meaning.”
Waymon Armstrong, President of ECS stated, “This program is another example of how ECS is helping its customers deliver advanced learning technology to enhance Education.” He continued, “We are proud to partner with RDECOM and DAU in delivering these virtual world and social network programs.”
