Virtually a World Away, ECS Supports the NATO Allied Command Transformation Office in Demonstration of Immersive Virtual World Technology
June 16, 2010. Orlando, Fla. Distance was not an issue for Engineering and Computer Simulations (ECS) at the recent ITEC conference in London. While travelers to ITEC experienced delays and cancellations due to volcanic ash from the eruption in Iceland, the grounded flights did not hamper ECS in supporting the NATO Allied Command Transformation Office in demonstrating their immersive virtual world technology.
The ECS team reached across the ocean and remotely assisted the NATO office in demonstrating the efficacy of distributed communications and collaboration using virtual world technologies for training and education. The ECS team included artists, engineers and management, who interfaced with NATO ACT personnel and ITEC attendees using Nexus to facilitate real time discussions through avatars interacting within realistic 3D environments. These environments provided context to the discussions and demonstrated the effectiveness of the virtual world technology.
This remote participation yielded a cost savings of over $10K in travel funds for the NATO ACT. However, in reality, the distributed event established even greater confidence in the Nexus system and virtual world technologies, and set the stage for huge savings potential as these economies scale across more users and additional events.
