ECS, Selected to Bring Medical Training Applications to Baghdad
August26, 2008. Orlando, Fla. Virtual Worlds Developer, ECS, Selected to Bring Medical Training Applications to Baghdad August26, 2008. Orlando, Fla. Engineering & Computer Simulations (ECS) announced today that it received a $1.4 million contract award from the U.S. Army RDECOM Simulation and Training Technology Center (RDECOM-STTC) to adapt its US-Nexus (a National Guard sponsored program that provides a secure persistent virtual world capability for training and collaboration) to meet the US Army’s constantly evolving medical training requirements. A primary component of this work entails accessing the virtual world features through Internet enabled mobile devices which are becoming more prevalent in the Army’s workforce.
Through the development and implementation of Medical Nexus, ECS will demonstrate how various technologies can be blended and distributed to meet the Army Medical Department’s (AMEDD’s) training and education requirements. Medical Nexus will deliver instructional content that combines elements of persistent 3D virtual worlds, immersive learning environments, virtual classrooms, simulation-based training, and collaborative, online knowledge repositories. The program will also include development and incorporation of web 2.0 tools, technologies, processes and methodologies that takes best practices from the commercial world and integrates them into a comprehensive knowledge network.
The US Army RDECOM-STTC acknowledged that the program has the potential to provide a critical capability to our soldiers. “Having the ability to simultaneously deliver content, access just-in-time knowledge, and participate in a medically related community of practice, is a powerful tool in helping the Army prepare soldiers for current and future missions” said Beth Pettit, STTC Division Chief for Soldier Simulation Environments.
ECS will also investigate different methods of delivering instructional content through a mobile device and will demonstrate the potential of mobile devices to deliver rich, scenario based simulations that support adaptive learning. “Initially, our Mobile Medic Application will focus on providing simulations and content to support the educational requirements for Combat Lifesavers” stated Waymon Armstrong, Chief Executive Officer from ECS. Armstrong further stated “This application will also interface with the Army’s Medical Nexus through wireless internet capabilities inherent in many of today’s phones.”
Upon completion of the proposed research a “Mobile Medic test suite” will be deployed to medical professionals in Iraq to test and evaluate Medical Nexus content. The suite will consist of a server, laptops, and any other required hardware that will allow “stand-alone” operation of the Medical Nexus in cases where there is no Internet connectivity, and/or “connected” access to the hosted implementation of the Medical Nexus when there is an Internet connection available.
