Every Soldier’s a Sensor – Mission Editor

ECS is providing innovative, effective and affordable upgrades to the US Army’s ES3 training game. These critical upgrades allow customized local training scenarios to be developed specific to the commander’s training needs in the field. ES3 is an education game to help soldiers train to be aware of their surroundings and aims to improve a soldier’s basic observing and reporting skills. The ES3 mission editor allows a user to combine a 3D terrain, objects, and figures with other 2D assets to accommodate a range of mission specific scenarios. This project is currently being managed through the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command’s Simulation Technology Training Center (RDECOM-STTC)

ES3 is a Web-delivered and Web-enabled combat patrol training tool for US ground forces, providing practice in Active Surveillance, Threat Indicator Identification, and Information Operations. It is currently being used as a component of basic training instruction with the First Combat Training Brigade, Fort Jackson and in pre-deployment training for soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York. The ES3 mission editory is a self-contained executable located in the ES3 root directory and developed as a stand-alone executable that gives the ES3 application the ability to customize scenarios using assets stored in both global and local repositories. The ES3 scenario editor also allows for the placement and modification of entities within the ES3 application. New assets (e.g., images, audio files) can be loaded into the editor so that the ES3 application can be tailored to the local situation.

The ES3 application was previously built using the Virtools development environment. However, it is currently being ported into the Open Source Delta3D game engine.
